Deepspace
The official website for Deepspace seemed to be having some troubles when I went to look at it, but from their last.fm profile I can tell you that Deepspace is Mirko Ruckels from Brisbane. I can also tell you that he makes very tasty ambient synthesiser tracks, often with the feeling of incidental music for some sci-fi epic or astronomy documentary. Read the rest of this entry »

4th Alternative
4th Alternative, whose track Mote appears in our first episode, is the musical project of Rob “Bombardier” Davies from Brentwood, England. Rob has a variety of musical styles, but what he seems to keep coming back to are slightly creepy soundscapes with lots of synth pads. Read the rest of this entry »

Creating playlists from webpages with Playr
If you ever find yourself looking at a web page with a long list of MP3 audio files on it and not knowing which, if any of them, to download first, Alf Eaton’s Playr could be very handy for you. It offers a set of bookmarklets, which you can drag into your browser’s bookmark toolbar. Once installed there, clicking any of the bookmarklets creates a playlist in your chosen format of all the MP3 files listed on the page you’re currently looking at. You can then open that playlist in the media player of your choice and it’ll stream all the tracks in turn, giving you a chance to preview the content and decide which you want to give hard drive space to.
The choices of format are M3U, SMIL, RSS and XSPF. If you’re not sure which to go for, M3U is the most common format and the chances are that the media player on your computer will understand it.
As an added bonus, there’s also a “Flash” bookmarklet, which rather than presenting you with a playlist file, opens a Flash audio player with all the tracks from the page listed, so you never have to leave your browser.
